Right! FAT has been the only way to be able to read MBR later and to
install LILO. My terminology is not exact, I know, but I have had to
reinstall whole NT on FAT for the same purpose..

I have had the same problem myself. I had given in to the demands of
this NT disk admin when it came asking for 'repairing' MBR... I damn
lost EVERYTHING...
I mean 'everything' on the machine was rendered useless..

The idea may be this.. I have sidey workarounds to everything these
days..
Install NT, then linux and then let NT take up the freespace.. Nothing
wasted, [at least not shown as wasted - and no 'jumping' required too]
