This is mostly due to a large number of vendors submitting their graphic
card and monitor specs to MS. In the case of X, the specs are all those
collected by users like you and I. WinDOS does an excellent job of
hardware probing. Such autoprobing does not exist in most distributions.
I've heard that the Corel distribution had a really good autodetection
system.

Honestly, I haven't had such problems in ages. 128M of RAM does the job
admirably for me.
