Motif and networking probs

Hiya fellows
I am having trouble with both networks and motif.
Networks::
I was trying examples from Stevens book #1(Sockets).The examples compile 
all right but almost all the
examples require hostname.I have tried 127.0.0.1 as IP address but it won't 
budge announcing a connect error.
Motif
How do you compile a simple motif application??If possible send a sample code
