The sound card can also be loaded as a module. Running sndconfig usually
does all the changes to load driver as a module, and reconfiguring the
kernel
is mostly unnecessary. RedHat also does not give the configuration setup as
they had compiled the kernel, and you may land up not compiling necessary
drivers in the kernel.

Also, I had a remote problem, and I was not getting sound in X (KDE) even
after checking start sound server. KDE was searching for the file soundcard
while sndconfig creates the file sound (or is it the other way round ??). A
link to this file solved the problem.

goto /usr/src/linux/ and read the documentation on how to compile the
kernel
