goto /usr/src/linux/ and read the documentation on how to compile the
kernel

In the GNOMe menu , there will be an option to quit.Try that.
If u are directly going to graphical login then try init 3 in gnome
terminal
or change a line in /etc/inittab
id:5:initdefault to id:3:initdefault
reboot and u will get into text mode.run sndconfig from there

If u go to terminal from an X-session (pressing Crtl+Alt+Fn) then Press
Alf+F7 to get back into X.If u login into text mode then use the command
startx.
