I think the simple relation will clear the doubt
Number of services running is directly proportional to the speed of 
the operaring System.
To increase the speed of your linux box 
you should shut down the services which you dont need.
For example Cron,sendmail,samba,squid,httpd etc.
By default the Rh6.1 installiton starts all the services 
you canconfigure it bye running 
ntsysv at command prompt
hope it will clear the doubts over the  speed
