I don't really know why its given , except that I *do* know that its
useful when you forget your root pw and need to retrieve it. Moreover ,
there are times when your hdd can get corrupted and going to linux single
helps.

This was already discussed earlier - check archives... 
In Short , if you *do* have physical access to a box , nothing prevents
you from throwing the monitor/CPU out of the balcony of a 7th floor house
or using a hammer to bust the box. Therefore , moral of the story , you
_cannot_ protect a box from physical damage.
