No. The correct way, if you are using diald, is to execute, as root,

/etc/rc.d/init.d/diald.init stop

If you are not using diald, then kill -15 pid can be used, or there may be a
script to kill pppd in /etc/rc.d/init.d.

As far as possible, kill -9 should be avoided.
