Inetrnet Problem

Hi all,
It is the problem regarding internet connection. Whennever i connect
to the net, the connection closes after 1-2 minutes saying pppd daemon
died unexpectedly.
Also how can we optimise the connection speed. In linux the MTU is set
to 1500 by default. How can i change it. Also r there any other parameters
that should be changed for optimising connection speed ?
