BSD = Berkeley Systems Division. Started right back when AT&T Bell Labs
released the unix source code to University of California, Berkeley, and Bill
Joy developed stuff like vi, the c shell, & to push processes into the
background, etc etc. This was Berkeley Unix - and Bill Joy took his
 experience across to Sun Microsystems.

So yeah, BSD predates the FSF by quite a bit. Dont exactly know about the
*bsd project and the BSD license though :)
