This is of course very generous, but wouldn't it make more sense to donate
a box of Suse Linux to people who would actually derive benefits from it,
such as schools and educational institutions who are currently faced with
using inferior and/or pirated stuff?

The LUGs are typically self-sufficient and (by definition) already Linux
users, so there is little to be gained by giving *one* copy of a Linux
distro to them.

However, that one copy, if given to a school, could work miracles. The
high-class documentation that comes with Suse, as well as the many apps,
would make all the difference.
