Re: Installation and Setup of Shared Disk/Mirror Disk AND Network Redundancy Problem

Hi Kamal

* Our server configuration is Pentium III processor,
12 MB RAM, 17 GB or more local SCSI hard disk and
SCSI shared and mirror disk in RAID architecture,
17" Color monitor, Floppy drive and CD writer, two
  NICs.

Only 12 MB RAM??!!! Give the server atleast something to live on... he..he..hee ;-)

<snip>

* Please suggest the support on LINUX to install the HP
CD writer. Whether CD writer device driver comes in
built into the Linux or has to be separately purchased
 for LINUX version.

AFAIK there is kernel level support for the CD Writers. You can use the char mode package 'mkisofs'/cdrecord as well as xcdroast, etc... There are nice GUI frontends available for virtually all the WM's

The utilities that are available for CD-R/W on Zoot are: cdrdao/cdrecord/mkisofs/cdparanoica/cdda2wav

However, if you want to write CD's with mixed modes, then use cdrdao as cdrecord lacks severely in this respect.

Rest are all the frontends for these (like xcdroast, gcdmaster, gcombust etc.)

There is a list for CD writing, cdwrite@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

There are a couple articles in the last issue of the Linux Gazette also.
http://www.linuxgazette.com

One issue that may crop up while installing the CD-Writer is the IDE/SCSI difference. All the CD-writing s/w need the writer to be SCSI. So if you have the SCSI one, it will be easy, just remember to compile the SCSI support into the kernel (if it is not already there). If you have IDE, then you'll have to load up a module (ide_scsi.o) which makes the IDE seem SCSI to the cd-writing software. Rest is the same.

Plz also read the CD-Writing-HowTo before going any further.

Hope this little info helps......

(And plz post the technical questions to LIH preferrably)
