/me too had this problem. Here's the fix:

Mouse for X (/dev/mouse) has to be symlinked to /dev/gpmdata instead of
your serial_mouse ? /dev/ttySx : /dev/psaux. You can have both gpm as
well as mouse under X. 

But there's also a drawback: If you want to play console games with
mouse support (say lsdoom / quake-*), you must revert back to the old
/dev/mouse->/dev/ttySx
