Sure. There is no chance for atul hearing about consoleTamil-0.4.
AkaramTeX editor in Tamil. A whole lot of fantastic work done by
Prof.Kalyanakrishnan (IIT-Madras CSE) under Linux for all the Indian
Languages ( I saw the demo last week for nearly 3 hours). The various
Machine Translation packages under development across the country in the
name of anusaaraka (telugu to hindi, kannada to hindi, marathi to hindi
and tamil to hindi) all under **Linux**.
for your info here is a brief about anusaaraka:
Anusaraka is a Language Accessor rather than a machine translation system
in true sense. It helps in overcoming the language barrier by assisting
the reader to access informaion from another language. Anusaraka analyses
the source language text and presents exactly the same information in a
language close to the target language. It tries to preserve information
from the input to the output text. It is domain free system and has been
adapted from Paninian Grammar. It has been developed for translation from
Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi to Hindi.
The major components of the system are:
Morphological Analyser
Local Word Grouper
Bi-lingual Dictionaries
Mapper from Source Language to Target Langauge
Word Synthesizer
Post-editing interface
The Anusaraka has been made available in the public domain as an E-mail
server for translation service from Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali &
Punjabi to Hindi. To run the Anusaraka on a given text, send the text by
e-mail to nandi@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with the language name as subject such as
`telugu' for getting the translation from Telugu to Hindi. This will
automatically run the Telugu to Hindi Anusaraka and the output produced
will be sent back to the sender. A copy is kept by the machine for later
study. The text should be in 7-bit ISCII coding. Similarly help by mail is
available if mail is sent with subject `Help'.
All of them are under GNU/GPL.
There is no chance for atul to know about KDE localisation effort for tamil. (tamil.htmlplanet.com).
It is after all ILUG duty to create awareness about all these things. As
I said in one of my earlier mails, the following are the urgent needs for
the INdian langauges:
* Building a Huge Lexical Resources for all the Indian Lang. like Parallel
Corpora, Annotated Corpora
* Building Dictionary/Thesaurus for all the Indian Lang.
* Statistical Processing Tools for Indian Lang.
* Indian Script Support at OS level (NCST-Bombay has send some
recommendations regd. this to the X-Consortium, MIT).
* HOWTOs in Indian Languages, etc..,
May be It is not atul fault. The people involved in INdian Lang.
Processing are not giving proper publicity or demos to the public that is
their fault. May be I can talk about the issues involved in Indian Lang.
Computing as far as I know. But I am an average linux user don't know
much about Linux Internals.
