As long as you configure mgetty and your dialout process to use the same
/dev/ttySx (ttyS0 or ttyS1) line, mgetty will automatically move out of
the way when you try to dialout.

Note that this will work only with ttySx - cua devices are no longer
supported since Linux 2.2.
