[LI] X11 does not start!

I recently installed Red Hat Linux 6.1 from the pc quest cdrom
I have by mistake configured X incorrectly and my system starts in run level
5 (ie X windows mode directly). It directly goes into X mode which is not
visible on the screen and i have no idea what goes on.
I have to turn off the machine without being able to shut down
when i start again i have to run fsck and get my system to normal( in the
administrator's mode).
when i try to modify /etc/inittab to change initdefault to 3 it says the
buffer is in read mode.
when i try to run Xconfigurator it can't write my options on to the file
saying that "YOu are not root user!"
how do i modify /etc/inittab.
Please help
Somebody also please tell me where i can get the device drive for my
graphics card - Cyber2000 PCI
awaiting help
Saurabh
