I use samtron 4Bi monitor though it doesn't appear in the list. I
used generic multisync monitor. I used 2 files from the linu-india.org/sis
one was an rpm file which i installed it. Next was xsuseconfig.tgz which
i copied to the / directory & i untared it. (Beware !! it overwrites your
xf86config file, the cards file. So you may not see many glorious cardds
supported since this is an old file.) I ran xf86config & i selected card
number as some 40x(x is number 1 (401) or (405) i am not sure). Then
i gave the chipset as sis86c205 & board name SG86C201. then i linked the
file XF86_SiS to the XF86_SVGA server after finishing xf86config.
(remember i didn't probe nor i used any clock settings & i choosed 432
for modes at 8bpp). Then i fired the startx & behold !! Gnome was greeting
me(though with warning message. Yeah i was root!!)
The trick for higher resolution (i.e, 15/16bpp (note not more than this in
X) ) is create the file .xserverrc in your home directory & edit that
file. Add the line exec - X:0 -- -bpp 16 in it. (Just check for the 2 --
or 1 - in the bpp side). save it & run X & you will be greeted with 16 bpp
display & colours are really beautiful.
If you get flickering try this. edit XF86CONF file & add the following
lines
Option "fast_vram"
Option "linear"
to your device/driver(sorry !! i am bit confused. Just check in case it is
only one of these). save it. And run X.
If you still get flickering or blurring at high displays then add the
line Option "no_bitblt". It really Works !! But the speed & performance
reduces like anything though you may get crisp & clear image.
If you still get flickering/blurring, then well try & stick to 8bpp alone.
(Notice some progs don't like 15/16bpp though. A good point in case is my
favourite xfishtank.)
Send Your experiences.
Happy Hacking !!
