[LI] config probs with X, modem and HD space loss??

hi,

one of my colleagues is interested in Linux and has been trying to configure
modem and X-windows on his machine for quite some time but :-(
he has RH6.0 installed on his

SONY machine: (model PCV-E314DS)
------------
PII-400 with 64 MB RAM, 1 USB and 3 iLink ports, DVD-ROM drive, audio and
video support, Games/Midi port apart from usual stuff.

The relevant details are --

DISPLAY CARD:
------------
model -> Matrox Mystique G200 AGP
Accelerator -> MGA-G200
Memory -> 8 MB
RAMDAC Speed -> 230 MHz
Serial No. -> Mystique

MONITOR:
-------
Samtron Non-Interlaced

HARD DISK:
---------
He has 10.8GB disk partitioned into 5GB (windows98) + 5GB (for Linux).
when Linux boots up it detects the disk correctly as 10GB, but
fdisk/cfdisk/diskdruid show it only upto 8GB i.e. 2GB is effectively lost??

MODEM:
-----
K56flex technology/V.90 compatible data/fax modem
As per the specification given, the maximum speed of faxing is 14.4 kbytes/sec.
The modem is capable of downloading at 56 kbytes/sec using K56flex technology
or V.90

They have provided a host of software along with preinstalled windows98
on pre-partitioned machine. one of those is WinFax from Symantec Corp.
Modem is giving problems even on win98. The provided phone-dialer is able to
dial out the number correctly and things are fine, but with same settings
the other software is not able to dialup (and get a login prompt?). If any idea
on win98 part, that's also welcome.

primarily i am looking for solutions on Linux. I have tried whatever little i
knew via Xconfigurator/ X -probeonly / disk tools etc.

hope to get solutions on this list.
sandeep
