The ide driver should not capture the device at boot time - then you
will not be able to use it as a SCSI-emulated drive. Compile the
kernel with all the cdrom stuff as modules (ide-cd, ide-scsi), and
then add the following to /etc/conf.modules :

options ide-cd ignore=hdd

This makes the ide-cd driver ignore the presence of your CD writer,
making it available for ide-scsi.

more details.
