 I had the same problem, but kppp worked like a miracle when I set
authentication to 'chap'. That was a blind shot and I don't know why it
worked.

Also kppp does not complain about 'lock' option in /etc/ppp/options as in 
RH5.2. I did put 'noauth' in /etc/ppp/options. Kppp is working with both
of the options.

Can anybody explain the difference between various authentication type
like terminal, pap, chap and script based.
