[LI] Connect to the Net

CHECK THIS OUT IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET USING "KPPP"

Hi there,

Many ppl are having problems connecting to the Net using linux so I thought to
post this.

I have been successfully connecting to the Internet using VSNL for about last 10
months and using IceNet ( a local ISP ) for about one week. I am using kppp as
my dialing software and have been able to connect using kppp shipped with RHL
5.2 (PCQ), RHL 6.0 (Chip) and even RHL 6.1(PCQ).

Here is how I have done it...

-> Install kppp (mentioned it just for the sake of it !!)

->First of all open the /etc/ppp/options file and remove the 'lock' mentioned
in the first line. I dont know if this is absolutely necessary but it works
that way.

->Now start kppp and click in setup.

->Create a new account. Now here are the tags ...

->Dial
                    -> Connection Name : My Connection (or anything you like)
                    ->Phone Number : Your ISP dial in number. If there are
                          more than one then you can mention it like
                          number1:number2:number3 ..and so on. That is if my
                          VSNL numbers are 6468111, 6563555 and 6449555 then I
                          would mention is as  6468111:6563555:6449555.
                     ->Authentication : Go for 'Terminal-based' now especially
                           if you are the one who has been the traditional Dial
                           Up Networking of Windows.
	 -> Forget the other options now...

-> IP
	 -> Select Dynamic IP and also select 'Auto-configure hostname from
	       this IP'

-> DNS
	 -> Domain name is domain of your ISP eg : vsnl.net.in for VSNL
	 -> DNS IP address.. here are the entries I have
		202.54.51.1
		196.12.190.7
		203.54.58.22
		202.30.54.1
	   These DNS servers are from both VSNL and IceNet... ha ha...
	    Well I dont know if all those IP represent DNS servers but I dont
	    care as far as it is working for me.

	 -> Select 'Disable existing DNS servers during connection'

-> Gateway
	  -> Select 'Default Gateway'
	  -> Also select ' Assign the Default Route to this Gateway'

Forget the Login Script and Accounting for now...

This was all about configuring the account ...
You can repeat (ofcourse you can) repeat the process for other accounts.

Oh yes ...
Configuring the moded is left still.....

Now after clicking on OK fo to 'Device; tab ...
Set the following ....

Modem Device - /dev/cua1 (for modems on COM2)
Flow Control  -  CRTSCTS
Line Termination  -  CR/LF
Connection Speed - 57600 ...well it hardly matters.
DO NOT SELECT "USE LOCK FILE"
Modem Timeout - 60 seconds ... or anything more (or less your choice)

In the MODEM tab,
Busy Wait  -  0 seconds
Just Query Modem to see of all is working fine..

In PPP tab,

pppd Timeout - 100 Seconds (to be on safer side .. my ISP take long to
                                      connect)
The rest you can manage ...

There you are ready to connect to the Net ....
Oh Yeah ... do click on the 'Connect' button !!!

I know there could be many alternatives for the way I have mentioned above but
the but as far as this method goes, I have been using it for about 10 months
now and I have no problems as far as it is working.
