did you check 

#tail /var/log/messages 

whats there in it this will give you clues 
kppp has good help, even i suspected pppd and tried what not but in
vain.
go through the kppp help, and do it step by step, did you try reducing
the speed of the modem in the dialer.
yes you can try the terminal option in kppp to dial in or for that
matter nothing like minicom.
