Hi,
       Seems as if you have your /etc/passwd entry mixed up. Could
you quote the line you added? And does your passwd file still
contain an entry for root (some programs might have a problem if
"root" is absent)? And are the programs you wrote alone not working?
Details please... (you neednt send your encrypted password, though it might 
be *very* helpful ;-P )
