Typical causes for this problem are:

- - Bad RAM
- - Bad hardware in general
- - Bugs in the install program

I've also had this happen to me on seemingly healthy hardware. If you
can somehow retrieve /tmp/install.log by booting from a floppy or something,
you can find out which is the exact package that crapped out.

Another way to attack the problem is to do a minimal install and then
installing the packages that you need by hand. The install process is
very I/O intensive and can push the hardware to its limits sometimes.
