RHL 5.2 was about as stable as RHL 6.0 is. Try installing raw RHL 5.2
(without PCQ's enhancements) and you would have faced similar problems.

I use kppp from RHL 6.0 with various ISPs who use PAP, but have not come
across this problem. I suspect that the problem lies in configuration, not
in RHL 6.0.
