ethertap details, please

hello,
i am trying to establish communication between two ethernet cards
without tcp/ip.i feel ethertap is a possible solution.both boxes have
red hat 6 with kernel 2.2.5-15 with ethertap support compiled in.tap0
has been created and configured on both the pcs.pinging to both tap
devices is sucessful.the read program for tapdevice works when i ping
tap0 on one box.but it fails when to read when something is written
thru the write program.
does the "write(tapdevice, buf, sizeof(buf))" command actually send
anything to the wire?can someone please provide me with more details of
how ethertap works?what exactly does it do?where can i find more
detailed info on ethertap?

waiting for replies,
sitaram shastri.
