kde FREEZE

How do I go about Installing KDE properly in RH6.If I change to runlevel 5
in /etc/inittab or if I do telinit 5 I get to a black disfigured screen
K-Desktop,I login and I am able to get to the first screen of KDE and then
my system freezes.Also at the K-desktop login if I click on any button
other than 'Go' my system freezes.No amount of ctrl+Alt+F1....F6 helps.In
RH5.2 KDE files were installed in /opt/kde Now everything has changed.

I have tried using Xconfigurator and have choosen the options
VGA640x480,Custom monitor-vertial sync 50-70.When I click on the option to
start x my system freezes.
