Yes you can do it.
Eudora for shell a/c does it that way.
Eudora connects to shell a/c and then does a telnet to localhost 110.
Once its connected to pop3 server it uses LIST RETR DELE etc. commands
to download the mail.
I did not try it in linux but you can do it. 
You may use chat for scripting.
