LINK: Linux in the Indian Press / March 11

* LINUX CATCHES THE attention of SMEs (small and
medium enterprises), says Express Computer in its
issue dated March 12. Its article on Page 6 says
Indian SMEs are beginning to see Linux as a
development platform "as it is both logical and
  commercially viable".
* SKOCH CONSULTANCY, a Delhi research agency, says
nearly 80 percent of SME developers in India
already have Linux as a platform.
* SKOCH'S director Sameer Kochhar says Linux is the
"logical choice" for application development, due
to the advantages it offers in terms of
scalability, availability, openness and a low
  total cost of ownership.
* CRM solution providers like Global Groupware
  Solutions, Momentum Systems, Techspan India,
  Global Information Systems, Intelsoft Technologies,
and Nucleus Software have already taken to Linux
with many more expected to jump in.
* "There is definitely a movement towards Linux
because of its open source code which makes
it less resource hungry. Not only does it offer
almost negligible licensing costs, but also
makes all the tools easily available anytime,"
  says Infoedge Solutions managing director
  Piyush Kumar.

* CHIPMAKER WANTS TO REVIVE FREE PC OFFER:
ZF Linux Devices is attempting to rescue the
free PC movement by cutting costs like never
before. The 5-yr firm, which makes a low-cost
  microprocessor called MachZ, has developed
a blueprint for an inexpensive PC called
  the Z-Port (about $250).
By buying MachZ chips from the firm and
adopting the Z-Port blueprints, ISPs can
assemble a PC for $250, a cost that could
  be subsidised through contracts with
subscribers. The design will be totally
  open source.
Feldman says the firm would succeed as the
MachZ processor is an integrated "system
on a chip" that combines input and output
controllers onto the same piece of silicon
as the microprocessor, thereby cutting costs.
The Z-Port can also be configured with a
free version of Linux, rather than Windows.
Although all of these concepts have been
tried in the past, ZF Linux's twist is
clubbing them all into a low-cost strategy.
