I don't find any problem with that. IRC is much more informal than a
mailing list, and conversation need not be restricted to just Linux
chatter. Since all the people that hang out there are into Linux in a
big way, there is bound to be talk about Linux as well! And if anyone
has questions or anything they want to talk about which is
Linux-related, they are welcome to go online and discuss it on IRC! 

So counseling, and personal communication isn't "the thing" or "the
problem". The problem is that there aren't enough people there..
