Even I used to check the IRC room/channel regularly earlier. It is now in a
pathetic state with only few names in the user list and that too with the
suffix "_away".

Not everyone can afford to be online all the time. As you have rightly
pointed out, we can decide on a time slot. But a time slot suitable for one
may not be suitable for another. A link on the LI site giving information
about the IRC room/channel is needed. Also when a person chooses to
subscribe to one of the lists, information about the IRC room/channel can be
included in the mail which majordomo sends.
