I doubt.  The issue at hand is not plain black-white-open-shut. Free
software doesn't have money to advertise itself.. primarily relying on
individual/community initiatives to get known/tested/accepted. It is only
after 9 years and intervention of Intel/IBM/Dell/SGI pumping in a lot of
promo behind Linux that Linux is coming out of the confines of the
technically elite to the common man's desktop. So merit isn't the only
criteria. Had it been so , then all destops would be flouting Xemacs instead
fo .doc spewers. 

	I do concede that my observation has more relevance to applications
/user-oriented software... techies usually find out about good software
pretty fast despite advts to the contrary:) (Apache vs IIS)

	Also, another factor which comes into consideraion is the evelopment
infrasructure and the turn-around time. Companies with more resources have a
shorter time-to-market. These companies can release versions on multiple
platforms in the same weekend !@! which is tough for good-willed-lone-ranger
techies to do..
