Re: [LI] Forming user groups in Colleges an Universities

I got a private email asking me why I didn't say anything in this thread.
The reason is that I am unsubscribed from LI, and wasn't paying attention
to LIG.

I couldn't think of anything to say that would be non-inflammatory.
So you'll have to put up with the following:

In this country, the single biggest contributor to Linux over the years
has been PCQ. Despite (failed) attempts by others, it wasn't until PCQ got
into the game that Linux got anywhere here.

Going by the arguements Raj puts forward, I suggest that all Linux India
groups (and Linux India itself) should be renamed to PCQ/Linux before PCQ
puts out the next Linux CD.

Sounds familiar? You bet.

It would be as ridiculous as renaming LI groups to GNU/Linux to please an
individual before said individual will deign to address ILUG-Delhi, and as
insulting to the Linux community as RMS's demand.

The largest part of RMS's demands is based on the fact that Linux distros
are based on a lot of GNU software, and that it wouldn't exist with said
software.

I propose that most GNU software distros are based around the Linux
kernel, and that GNU software wouldn't get anywhere without Linux today.

In case anyone here chooses to weakly mumble "hurd!" or "*BSD" - I choose
to ignore such ineffective arguements - Hurd is still vapourware, and
*BSD, despite the long time that it has been around, has never had the
impact of Linux, even though I do acknowledge the possibility of a better
design in Hurd (but I believe in "seeing is believing") and the greater
stability and speed of *BSD.

We had a discussion here a while ago about RMSs stand. I got my butt
flamed to a crisp for my comments.

I now feel vindicated by the the current blackmail attempt, which shows
how the individual operates.

I am in the process of registering my protest with Wrox about their
renaming all sessions referring to Linux in Bang!inux overnight to
GNU/Linux, for the same reason, and I will probably drop out of the event
should they persist - largely because it has been dictated by RMS.

Happy flaming.
