unable to login through console

I'm facin a peculiar problem. Pressing enter after typing in the user
name at the console login: prompt just redisplays a login: prompt.

Oddly, I am able to login normally through the graphical prompt in
runlevel 5.

A peek at /var/log/messages throws up errors from pam_pwdb and login.

I don't remember the exact error, but can get back with it tomorrow.

The error is somthing like "Conservation error" from login and a
"cannot find password for user xyz" from pam_pwdb.

Anybody got a clue whats up??

It might be related that syslogd displays [FAILED] at bootup, but
logging to /var/log/messages is going on normally.

The box uses RH 6.1.
