ftp problem

this is w.r.t. my earlier mail regd. ftp problem.

/* earlier mail */

I am using ipchains in the linux server to provide Internet connection to
our Intranet. I am not able to do ftp or wget in any of the system
connected to Intranet except the server which is running ipchain. But if i
do ftp using gftp or thru browser i am able to download the
files. somewhere i studied that ftp needs to open a data connection with
the target m/c.

Qn.1) If that is the reason why i am not able to connect to ftp
from intranet? what is the sol. for this?

Qn.2) in that case why it is possible thru browser or gftp?

/* end of earlier mail */

Now if i use --passive-ftp in wget it is working. but if i use passive
mode in gftp i am getting the following error message:

227 Entering Passive Mode (209,202,197,152,224,238) Cannot create a data
connection: No route to host Cannot put file /mksbm.txt to ftp.tripod.com
Disconnecting from site ftp.tripod.com

what could be the problem?
