Debian installation

You can try to run lilo -v -C full_path_2_config_file on the alternate 
shell and see what it cribs about.

Do you mean to say that you couldnt create a boot floppy?  That is wierd.

If none of this works and you want to boot into debian inspite of the
LILO goofing up and you have dos you can just boot into dos and boot
linux off the CD using loadlin.exe (which is on the CD).

typically one does 
CDROM:> loadlin kernel-image-which-you-want-to-boot root=/dev/hda?

and then once you have booted linux run lilo -v and see what it cribs
