The Indian Linux Users' Group, Chennai met at 1530 hrs. at the
Computer Centre, IIT Madras today (11th. September 1999). Attendance
was notably better than average, about three members shy of forty.

The highlight of the evening was a talk by visiting Debian
developer, and regular Debian CD donor :), Sudhakar 'thaths'
Chandrasekharan, on the Debian packaging system. Thaths started out by
walking us down the Debian ftp site directory layout, explaining the
underlying philosophy of separation of the free and non-free packages,
and the reasons behind such policy. A general overview of the Debian
effort consequently emerged. He also expounded in detail, on the process
of creating a Debian archive (.deb package) from scratch, using Joey Hess'
debhelper package. A few words on the process of applying to become a
Debian developer were also said. A general Q&A session followed. Thank
you, thaths, for the CDs and the talk !

In the brief interval that followed, Debian CD sets brought by
thaths, and Tucows' Linux archive CD sets obtained by Prabhu
Ramachandran were distributed.

The final session of the day was occupied by discussion and
planning for the ilugc Linux Demo Day effort coming up on the 18th. of
this month. Much of the logistics has already been accounted for,
courtesy P. Asokan and Sriram of OS4/Focus IT, with advertisements and
flyers in industry publications on the anvil. Another Demo Day
co-ordinator meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 15th. September at
the Focus IT office on Haddows' Road. Please check the news section at
www.chennailug.org for updates on the LDD effort.
