 you haven't mentioned about any particular field but
in general I would recommend "Beginning Linux
Programming Second Edition" by Wrox Publishers. It is
really a handy book covering almost all the major
fields from shell scripts to network programming to
device driver.

Then the linux documentation i.e., HOWTo's and man
pages will help you on specific programming issues in
details.
