hi there,
To disable logging of passwd in /var/log/messages disable debug option in /etc/ppp/options
( man ppp for more info ) and regarding your earlier problem 

add this line
lcp-max-configure <n> to your /etc/ppp/options
where the default value of <n> is 10 . Try increasing the value of <n> and se if you are lucky.
