Try using wvdialconf to autodetect your modem, init string etc etc.  Or
try using the redhat ppp dialer (from X) to set up the connection (this
uses wvdial in the backend).

The timeout might have to be altered for your server.

Oh yes, isn't there some command like ATDI for dialing an ISDN line?
Someone (Atul, was it) posted this some time ago on LI.
