When the screen blanks out, it means that X works fine with your card, and
it is usually a monitor issue.

Have you tried running Xconfigurator --expert and setting everything
manually? Try setting to 640x480x8bit on a custom monitor setting and see
what you get, then work your way up.

Note that there are a few Trident cards that don't work as advertised. We
saw one in November when the display *always* went to the TV-out port -
even though the card didn't *have* a TV-out port!
