OK, I throw in the towel.

Has *anyone* here successfully got USB support working under Linux? I
don't mean just compiled, but actually used with USB scanners and/or
cameras.

I am working with the 2.3.x USB drivers backported to 2.2.x, and I get all
the right results (including device recognition and registration) but I
can find no way to get SANE, OpenDIS or any of the other USB apps to work.
Obviously I am doing something wrong. 

So anyone out there?
