If you really want control over the situation and can manage things smoothly
in text mode, then u can try using wvdial directly in a virtual console on
ur machine. The RH ppp dialer in turn uses wvdial.

But for this u would have to tweak tthe /etc/wvdial.conf for your user and
pass specific settings which I am sure are very easy to do once u have gone
through the man pages of wvdial.

Give it a try....and don forget to add the VSNL name servers in
/etc/resolve.conf or U'd be stuck up with using IP addresses to access hosts
on the Internet.

It worked for me flawlessly after I tweaked the above things.
