For starters - to read newsgroups you use NNTP (port 119) rather than pop
or imap.  Then, posting to newsgroups you send to comp.lang.misc.perl /
alt.sex.foot-fetish or whatever takes your fancy.  Mailing lists (like LI)
are distributed through email.  

Read the usenet faq from rtfm.mit.edu (in fact rtfm please).
