[LI] squid and standalone machine

Hi friends,

I want to setup a caching server on the lines of squid on my desktop machine for
faster web access. 

Is it advisable to setup squid on a standalone machine ? Is there any other
caching server which I can use ? 

Any pointers to the above will be of great help ?
