Here are some excerpts from Raj's mail which he sent  when i had
the same difficulty quite sometime back.

Boot with

        linux init=/bin/sh

Then in single-user mode,

        mount -oremount,rw -n /
        vi /etc/passwd (or /etc/shadow)
        mount -oremount,ro -n /

and reboot (switch off and on if necessary).
