I was using FBDev for my ATI Rage AGP card at 800x600 and 16-bit colour for
several months on RH 6.0 and then RH 6.1 until I found an X-server for ATI Rage
cards at SuSe.com. FBDev worked pefectly without any kernel recompiling. You
can even add vga=<code> to your lilo.conf and then run lilo -v.
