[LI] DU problems

Dear Folks,

To clear up one small doubt: Check out this link for a definition of a Guru.
I'm a longtime lurker and a recent and rare poster. I'd wonder if I'm even
remotely eligible - consider all that I've been reading on the history of
Linux - I'd say I'm more than a plain newbie - I'm a very awe struck one!
Calling the Gurus was an initial post by Rohit, Digest #343, incidentally.
Thou, I'd really think that there is only one true Guru on this list - Prof
Guru<nandan> Bhatt ;-). Sorry. Could'nt resist that one.
Apart from many other things that I've been wanting to post, I'd entirely
forgotten about Chetan's 'du' problems. Well, I did some testing as well,
and I've found some VERY interesting results. Ok, some baseline info, I have
Linux (PCQ RH6.1 - ext2fs ), Win98 (FAT32), NT (FAT16) running on a machine.
I took three files, of varying sizes, tinkered around and du'ed em on each
filesystem. Results are here:

FileSystem	Size Reported	Size in Kb

Test 1
Actual 355328 347
FAT32 356352 348
FAT 360448 352
ext2fs 360448 352

Test 2
Actual 100000 98
FAT32 102400 100
FAT 131072 128
ext2fs 106496 104

Test 3
Actual 55328 55
FAT32 57344 56
FAT 65536 64
ext2fs 61440 60

Ok, first things first.
FAT == Ok. 8kb file allocs, every file = minimal integral multiple of 8kb.
FAT32 == Ok, 4kb file allocs, every file = minimal integral multiple of 4kb
ext2fs 	== Blah? bzuuurg. What's happening? It's supposed to be a minimal
integral multiple of 1kb <it is an integral multiple of 1kb, thou ;-)>. From
where it's supposed to be
347 changes to 352?
98 changes to 104?
55 changes to 60?

If Chetan was confused in the first place, man, am I clear after all this or
what!!!!! SOMEBODY help!! What is going on ? Someone with filesystem info?

ReSourcefully,
M

Fate / providence had nothing to do with it. Apart from the many other
things that you got so completely wrong, there is NO Chem Engg course at
UVCE. So, you either got the course or the college or both wrong. In any
case, no harm done, fate was on UVCE's side I'd assume ;-).
