  Um this might be weird but I have a Yamaha OP-L 3 SAX Sound card too ..
with 120 W Creative speakers and from day one on RedHat I could do a
#sndconfig and play my mp3's on xxms perfectly fine , with no OSS drivers
etc. Guess my installation of RH was smarter ? <grin> just kidding ;-)
 ok that's 3 smileys and i _hopefully_ won't get flamed for acting pro
etc... <keeps fingers/hands/legs crossed>
