The usual reason for editing a makefile are -

1. Changing default paths specified.  Say you already have kDE 
installed in /opt/kde and want to replace it with the new version.  
But RHL goes ahead and installs kDE in /usr/kde and you have the 
old version still on your system.

2. If you want to install specific parts of the package only, and not 
the entire package.

3. If the makefile calls PERL / gcc etc, then the paths on your 
system have to be specified, which may be different from the paths 
entered in the makefile.  Use whereis perl (or which perl) to find out.
